11/23/2023 0 Comments Divine office latin chant recorded![]() In terms of a currently-in-print Latin-English edition of the 1960 breviary, the Baronius is the only game in town. As an American I've made a few edits (instead of praying for the Queen I sub in our leaders etc). But in reality I've found (much like Newman in tract 90) that almost all of it can be interpreted in a Catholic theology. If you're a Catholic (I am), I know there can be some concern about using a non-Catholic prayer system. Finally if you're willing to follow the 1662 lectionary ( monthly, Holydays, Sundays) you'll get most of the OT+apocrypha / year and the nearly all the NT x 3 per year. It's traditional in that it mostly follows the Sarum Calendar. There are two hours per day (matins and evensong). The English is beautiful, the psalter is complete and monthly. The BCP was really designed after Christian worship had moved to a parish model and it reflects that. The historical difference is that when the EF office was designed it was designed with professional prayers in mind (i.e. This was a development of the EF style divine office. My sideways jump and where I'm most happy thus far has been the Anglican 1662 Book of Common Prayer. It's structure doesn't really allow people to pray just Lauds and Vespers well either. matins lauds, prime//terce, sext none// vespers compline). Even pre-vat 2 most priests would put several hours together (i.e. The EF on the other hand is really designed for professional prayers. Additionally the LOTH is ugly in English and has a scriptural selection with all the difficult bits edited out. I mean when the major hours take 10 minutes while going slow (there just isn't a lot of material), it's hard to feel like you're really making a sacrifice. I found the LOTH didn't feel like an actual practice. ![]() ![]() My personal transition was much like your own. How many times have I tried jogging for a week? Remember in the LoTH you're saying part of the psalter once per month, in the EF it's the entire psalter (no editing) every week. I would recommend much longer than a week (at the very least a liturgical season).
